On the morning of July 11th Scott left to ride his mountain bike to work. He hadn't been gone very long when I got a call from him saying that he had crashed at the very top of Webb Hill. He was talking okay and said he would walk down and meet me at the gate. I ran Brigham to my mom's and started driving up the hill when I got another call from him. This time his voice was really shaky and he told me he couldn't make it to the gate, I would need to get a 4-wheeling truck up to him. In no time at all my mom and Zac were headed up to us in Zac's truck. In the mean time I had gotten to the gate and started runnig up the hill in my flip flops to meet him. I finally met him walking amazingly slow. He was holding his arm and moaning pretty bad. He sat down and started shaking so I made him stand back up and keep walking. We got him into Zac's truck then down to the van then to the hospital. He just kept holding his arm and moaning. I'm not sure if I have ever seen anyone in so much pain. It was incredibly sad.
After a few hours of poking, prodding, x-rays, and lots of drugs, we learned that he had dislocated his elbow and shattered 2 bones in his hand. He also tweaked his ankle and foot, scraped up his knee pretty bad, got bruises and cuts all over him, and got a nice hole in the back of his elbow that needed stitches. I am incredibly grateful that he was wearing a helmet, as it was dented where his head hit a rock.
I didn't get any pictures at the ER (I wasn't exactly prepared to be there). They put him into a full-arm splint and a sling and made him wait for almost a week for swelling to go down (which it never did) before he could go to the orthopedic doctor.

| This is in between the ER and the orthopedic doctor. |
| Doesn't his hand look awesome? And yet... his hand pain has never been as bad as his elbow pain. |
| This was our first real look at his whole arm at the doctor on the 17th. |
| The bones that are broken are directly under his pointer and middle fingers. It's sort of obvious in this picture. |
| The plan at the doctor was to get a cast put on it while it healed. Our plans changed when the doctor took more x-rays. It turned into a pre-op appointment and we were told to take him to the hospital for surgery the next day. |
| This is before surgery. He is pretty relaxed. We had the best group of people to work with. It was a huge blessing because I was pretty nervous to send my husband into surgery. |
This is after surgery. He wasn't having much fun anymore. He spent a long time in recover and got really drugged up. He finally got someone to loosen the splint then he was doing a ton better. The nurse told him to only eat a few really light things until the morning but he was starving and didn't care. He ate so much that night it was crazy! He has worn his splint for a week and he goes tomorrow (it's really late, so I guess it's really today) to get a cast put on then he stays in the cast for 3 weeks. It's hard to be a dental tech with one hand! I have seen a lot more of him lately than usual, it's kind of strange. I have realized, once again, how fragile life is. I am so in love with my husband and I am incredibly grateful that he came out of his wreck as well as he did. I'm thankful that some of his job is on the computer so he can still work right now. I'm thankful that he was wearing a helmet. I'm thankful that we just reduced our insurance deductible (the ER bill alone was $3,500). And I'm thankful for my dad who has taken on a huge load at work to cover for Scott. Midst a trial, we have so many amazing blessings! |
